The world is a different place now. When events shake the collective consciousness of a nation, the resolve and wisdom of the people is tested. Certainly, with this “deadliest act of terrorism in world history,” according to Wikipedia, the memories and feelings certainly have lingered over these last 20 years.
This recent anniversary of the tragedy brings it all back. Every bit of it. Digging up an old wound is difficult. Losing family members, friends, co-workers and/or acquaintances in the events of the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, most certainly intensified and elevated the grief and sadness of survivors to a much higher level.
The number of innocent people who lost their lives that day was 2,958, not including the 19 hijackers. The ripple effect of the actions of a few leaves millions, not only in this country but around the world, still asking, “Why?”
For millennia, bad things have happened to good people. And our many questions related to this phenomenon will remain until our capacity to understand is greatly expanded.
Why didn’t God stop the 19 hijackers on 9/11 and prevent the tragedy? Why didn’t He step in and stop the slaughter of 6 million Jews in World War II and everyone else who has died in battles of war — combatants and innocents? Why doesn’t He prevent little people from dying and cure diseases that take thousands of people every day? He certainly could prevent natural disasters and all the ilk of our society, if only He wanted to.
We live in a fallen world. Sin entered the world when Adam and Eve ate a forbidden apple from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Their lives already embraced eternity before the bite, but when they touched the forbidden fruit, they and all the rest of us lost Paradise and the ability to live forever on this earth. So God, in His extravagant love, found another way to get us back in right relationship with Him. The only way we can enter Paradise now is two-fold: accept the work of Jesus in this life and then die an earthly death.
In John 16: 33 TPT, Jesus states, ”For in this unbelieving world you will experience trouble and sorrows, but you must be courageous, for I have conquered the world.”
Romans 12: 17,21 NKJV exclaims, “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Overcome evil with good? That is so contrary to our sin-nature. What good can come from the evil intent and actions of others? God only knows. Sometimes we can’t see His plan, or His reasoning. But we know in Romans 8: 28 that our Lord is always working for the good of those who love Him, and are called according to His purpose.
Trusting God is always the better option. God holds all the chapters of the book called History. We only get to see a few pages of this magnificent story. Just trust Him.
If you need some assurance, read the stories of Joseph and Job in the Bible. Check out Genesis 50: 20! There are certainly many others! Take a journey and hunt for them.
Another encouraging passage is located in Romans 5:3-5, TPT. “But that’s not all! Even in times of trouble we have a joyful confidence, knowing that our pressures will develop in us patient endurance. And patient endurance will refine our character, and proven character leads us back to hope. And this hope is not a disappointing fantasy, because we can now experience the endless love of God cascading into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who lives in us.”
One of these days, God has determined and promised to make all things right and He will judge everyone for what they have done in this life. Justice is coming my friends. Be encouraged by the following verse and know that in Christ Jesus, God is for us, not against us!
“Beloved, don’t be obsessed with taking revenge, but leave that to God’s righteous justice.” For the Scriptures say: “Vengeance is mine, and I will repay,” says the Lord. Romans 12: 19, TPT.
In the end, justice will be delivered swiftly and decisively. We won’t have to worry about the details. We just need to know Jesus will make things right with all those who have been wronged in any way. So, be of good courage and wait upon Him.
