To the editor:

It seems that Robert Langseth’s understanding (9-8-21) of the Creator’s endowment of life us clouded by his determination to be pro-choice. As any biology student can attest, the baby’s existence in the mother’s uterus is both actual and substantiated life, as evidenced by growth, movement, responding to stimulation, taking in of nutrients, etc. Far from being the products of an impersonal and programmed assembly, the Scripture declares that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, tenderly known, and never abandoned by our loving God. (Psalm 139:1-18)

Taking one’s first breath is not equivalent to the beginning of human life. The lord told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I know you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” the Bible reveals that the calling and purpose of each person’s life exists before birth. The angel’s word that John the Baptist would “be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb,” illustrates this fact: “And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary. That the babe leaped in her womb; Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Luke 1: 41)

Abortion is the taking of innocent human life, and to simply chalk it up to a “choice” conferred by “democracy” certainly rises the spiritual ramifications. Proverbs 6: 17 states unequivocally that the shedding of innocent blood is a thing God hates. Children are given to us as blessings, and Jesus tells us, “Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.” (Matthew 18:5)

As one who has counseled with a number of women who have experienced abortion, I know that regret runs deep, and self-hatred and shame are very real consequences of that decision. Thankfully, there is forgiveness and restoration to be found in Jesus. I have seen first-hand the peace and healing that the love of Jesus imparts, and it is beautiful.

True freedom and a correct application of democracy is in recognizing that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights, and that the first of them is life. Life is complicated, and it is sacred. It is not to be squandered, stolen, or disregarded. We come into our true identity as lovers of God when we care for the most vulnerable. As Proverbs 31:8-9 tells us: “Open your mouth for the speechless, in the cause of all who are appointed to die. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.”
