Trinity Lutheran Church (918 Tayman Ave.) is pleased to announce that Ruth Jensen, pastor, begins her service as pastor on Sept. 1. After over a year of prayer, discernment and search, Jensen was chosen as the top candidate to be called to Trinity. Trinity Lutheran Church has served Somerset for more than 230 years.

Jensen was born in Columbus, Ohio, was raised in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She completed her undergraduate study at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, graduating summa cum laude with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Religion/Religious Studies and Church Music. She was rostered in the Lutheran Church in America as a Lay Professional Leader in 1984 and served congregations in the Greater Milwaukee Synod and Allegheny Synod during the first 24 years of her ministry.

In 2006 she earned a Master of Arts degree in Children, Youth & Family Ministry from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, followed by her Master of Divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg (now United Lutheran Seminary) in 2009. She has served in ministry for over 35 years. Jensen previously served Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Windber, and Grace Lutheran Church in State College, the largest congregation in the ELCA’s Allegheny Synod.

Jensen brings considerable gifts to Trinity, but above all she brings a vision that all people will know and personally experience the love of God. She feels called to reach out to the lost, anxious, conflicted, broken, shame-filled, abandoned, and marginalized people in our families, neighborhoods, and communities.

Trinity Lutheran Church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with nearly 3.3 million members in more than 8,900 worshiping communities across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of "God's work. Our hands.," the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA's roots are in the writings of the German church reformer Martin Luther.

Jensen follows a long line of faithful Pastors, including Interim Pastor Douglas Knupp, Pastor Linda McElroy Thomas, Pastor Ed Hammet, Pastor Robert Hoover, Pastor Susan Yatta, and many more. Trinity joyfully welcomes her and looks to exciting new ways to serve the people of Somerset.
