Is the Bible pro-life? Family Research Council's stand on abortion stirs debate

The Family Research Council is facing the heat on social media after they weighed in on the Supreme Court's refusal to block Texas' abortion ban after the organization claimed that the Bible was pro-life. The Family Research Council is a nonprofit research and educational organization dedicated to articulating and advancing a family-centered philosophy of public life. In addition to providing policy research and analysis for the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the federal government, FRC seeks to inform the news media, the academic community, business leaders, and the general public about family issues that affect the nation from a biblical worldview.

"The Bible is ardently and unequivocally pro-life," the FRC tweeted, failing to give any additional explanation as to what they meant. This ticked many of the people who were pro-choice, the wrong way on Twitter, who began citing examples or disavowing the holy book altogether. Some of the other people who have spoke up about the Texas abortion ban include Hillary Clinton, Jen Psaki, Joy Reid and Paxton Smith.

'Bible is man's interpretation of other men’s interpretations'

FRC's interpretation of the Bible gave rise to a heated debate online as many of the people refused to believe that the organization had even read holy book before commenting. "When you haven’t actually read the Bible," one of them said, while another noted, "Do you guys know there are republican WOMEN who want all women to lose their rights to vote and work? I’ve had conversations with some of them. They all say that according 'the Bible' those duties should belong to men only. The brainwashing is so deep-rooted. It’s almost sad." A third stated, "Actually, God is the least pro-life character in the Bible. And @FRCdc is 'ardently & unequivocally' the opposite of everything Jesus taught."

The next commented, "The Bible doesn’t say anything about abortion. But Jesus was big on making sure people had health care." One more added, "You should probably read the Bible." Another remarked, "No one interpreted the Bible to be against abortion until the mid 19th century." One of them stated, "Republicans are using the Bible against women to get votes and stay in power. Pretty fkin sure that’s against the Bible’s teachings." A commenter tweeted, "The Bible isn’t a fact based book." One more quipped, "My favorite part of the Bible is when God kills everyone on earth and then Christians use it to claim He’s 'pro-life.'" One more said, "The Bible is quite literally pro-abortion. To be fair it isn't pro-choice, God makes a woman have an abortion if her husband thinks she cheated on him. The abortion doctor is the priest. Read it for yourself and be amazed: Numbers 5: 11-31."

A person reacted with, "The US is ardently and unequivocally committed to the Constitution and its people, not the Bible." One more remarked, "In Numbers, God gives Moses instructions on how to handle a cheating wife. The husband has to take her to a priest, and if she’s pregnant by the other man, the priest forces her to drink a potion that’ll make her miscarry. It’s still men taking over a woman’s reproductive decisions, but even God provided a whole recipe for an abortifacient in the Bible, if we’re going there. (Start at Numbers 5: 11)" Another wrote, "The Bible is man's interpretation of other men’s interpretations."
