TEXARKANA, Ark. — The neighborhood around Grandview Church of God in Christ, 1501 Grand Ave., turned out to help local young men returning to school soon to get a good start.

Community members as well as the congregation helped obtain and stuff backpacks for the young men full of school supplies. Cooks came to help provide lunch. And a couple of skilled barbers were there to give free hair cuts to prepare them for their school year.

The Rev. Thomas Turner lost his wife last year and after that happened, time in prayer convinced him that he needed a new expression of Christ's love in his community.

"My wife was a loving woman, a God-loving woman and one who loved her community," he said. "I wanted to come up with something that would show this love she had, would show Christ's love to this community. I prayed about it and from that, Community Day, the first put on by our church, was put together."

Liz "J.J." Johnson, pastor of the Straight and Narrow Way worship group of Texarkana, Texas, joined with him in this venture.

"Community Day, this was driven by Pastor Turner," she said. "God put this on our heads to pour love on this community, to restore hope, and let them know, God is still here."

Blizz Jones of the Tonsorial Arts Barber Shop and School was one of the barbers offering the boys free cuts to help them start the school year right.

"It feels good, being able to help, getting them ready for the first day of school," he said. "First time I've done an event like this, would love to help out with this every year."
