C. S. Lewis was an intellectual genius who used his gift of thinking to explain why Christianity has to be true. In his great little book, "Mere Christianity," he starts out by discussing Moral Law (or the Law of Human Nature or Right and Wrong). He says that this is a real law that we did not invent and yet know we should obey.

He suggested that the next time you hear someone argue against God’s existence because of cruelty, injustice, or tragic incidents in the world, ask him how he got the idea of just and unjust. The truth is that God is the One Who gave man the idea of right and wrong.

Atheism is just too simple. If the universe and life are meaningless, we would never have found out that they are meaningless. The Moral Law compels us to do right, even when we would rather not. God provided us the Law of Right and Wrong (Moral Law) and everyone on earth fails to practice it (We are all sinners).

God is our only ally in this world, and we have all become His enemies. He became a flesh-and-blood man (Jesus of Nazareth) to die in our place for transgressing God’s Moral Law. “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Sadly, people did not believe Jesus was the Christ (Messiah) in spite of witnessing His healing, His raising people from the dead, His calming the storm at sea, His walking on the sea, and His rising from the dead. More tragically still is the fact that people still reject Him.

Most people die without believing in and trusting their souls to Christ. Therefore most souls proceed the moment of death to hell. They could so easily go on to heaven and enjoy an eternity of blissful happiness instead of an eternity of punishment and suffering in hell.

God’s Word (the Bible) explains why this is true in 1 Corinthians 2: 14. It tells us, “But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

The natural (lost) man has the fatal flaw of pride. He believes he have sufficient intellect to know more than the Bible. What he fails to realize is that God did not see fit to endow man with sufficient intelligence to understand many things, not only spiritual things, but even phenomena on earth, such as gravity, magnetism, and electrostatic forces.

There are also paradoxes that man can never understand. Paradoxes are seemingly contradictory ideas that are still true, such as the Trinity in which God is one but three persons. Another paradox is election vs. free will. How can God choose some to be saved and yet offer salvation to all?

Proud man simply dismisses paradoxes as untrue. Satan is obviously behind this and all mischief. That is why he is so anxious to keep people from attending church, where they would hear the truth proclaimed. God enjoins church attendance in Hebrews 10: 25, where He says, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some.”
